Declan Galbraith is an Irish boy who lives in Kent, England. In many ways he is a normal 10-year-old boy. He likes computer games, swimming, and soccer. He lives with his parents and his six-year-old sister. His cousin Joe is his best friend. But Declan is not just a normal boy. He is a very unusual 10-year-old.
When Declan was very young, he spent a lot of time with his grandfather, Ben. Ben was a musician. He played traditional Irish music with Irish folk bands. They traveled to many places singing and playing music in bars and clubs. Declan went with his grandfather’s band and learned to sing. He sang the songs that his grandfather taught him. After his grandfather died, Declan continued singing the songs that he learned from him.
When Declan was seven, he sang in a talent competition. He won the competition. His parents entered him in other competitions. He sang traditional Irish songs and modern songs. In fourteen months, Declan won sixteen competitions. Everyone thought Declan’s voice was amazing.
Soon record companies began to call. Many record companies wanted Declan to sign a contract with them. They offered him a lot of money. Last year, he signed a contract to make 3 record albums. The record company will pay Declan more than 1 million pounds (about ,600,000) to make three record albums.
Declan’s father left his job as an electrician to help with Declan’s career as a singer. Declan’s mother said, “Declan does not really understand all the record company stuff. He is just doing what he loves best—singing.”
